Gary Manning knelt in the van, unfolding a wheelchair Phoenix Force had just picked up at Bethlehem Medical Supply. David McCarter stood hunched over in the van, trying valiantly to adjust the length of the crutches that had come from the same store while Calvin James, his brown eyes hidden behind black sunglasses, tapped the white tip of his new cane on the floor.
"So," Encizo said, looking up from his seat on the floor of the van, "you figure the guy in the corduroy cap is their sentry?" The little Cuban wore the white slacks and pullover top of a medical attendant.
Katz shrugged. "It's impossible to be sure. But even if he isn't a lookout, they might have another one. In any case, the administrator who found me in the back hall is in league with themâof that I'm certain." He turned to Manning, who had the chair unfolded. "You and Rafael go first," he said. "Rafe, wheel him to the side of the hall and get one of the blue forms from the pad at the reception counter."
Encizo nodded. "What if they ask me something, Katz? My Hebrew isn't much better than my Martian."
Katz smiled. "It used to be called deaf and dumb. Now I believe it is referred to as mute and hearing impaired. But regardless of what you call this disability, it seems that this would be the perfect time for you to acquire it."
Encizo chuckled. He opened the door, glanced around, then exited and pulled the wheelchair after him.
Manning held a lumpy blanket as he climbed down, took a seat and spread the covering across his knees. Encizo wheeled his patient down the sidewalk, then disappeared around the corner.
"Give them five minutes, David," Katz told McCarter. "You're next."
"Bully," the Briton said. He turned to James. "Perhaps Ray Charles here will entertain us with a quick rendition of 'Hit the Road, Jack' while we wait."
James grinned behind the sunglasses. "I lean more toward Stevie Wonder," he said. "How about 'Ebony and Ivory'? You can sing the Paul McCartney part."
McCarter glanced at his watch, then stood. "Maybe later. Right now, I'm afraid it's time for me to limp off into the sunset." The van door slid open again and he was gone.
"You don't think there's going to be a problem with the black skin here in Israel?" James asked Katz, lifting the sunglasses off his face for a moment.
"There are more black Jews than you realize," the Israeli stated.
He waved a hand at the door. "Go."
As soon as James had disappeared around the corner, Katz glanced at his watch. He would give it two more minutes, then return to the Evaluation Center himself to lead the attack downstairs.
Katz readied himself, lifted the duffel bag, drew the drawstring and stepped out of the van. He felt his heart race as it always did before impending battle, and quickened his pace.
The Israeli turned the corner and saw the Evaluation Center ahead. He hurried on, the knot in his stomach pushing his feet forward.
